Alan C. Pope High School and the Performing Arts
Alan C. Pope High School is part of the Cobb County School District and located in east Cobb County. Since its doors opened in 1987, Pope High School has built a strong reputation for excellence in academics, athletics, and the fine arts.
All of the performing arts programs at Pope have received high honors at GMEA Festivals and other competitions around the country and have been asked to perform at prestigious events and locations throughout the United States and Europe. In May of 2003, the first chapter of Tri-M Music Honor Society was formed at PHS. Approximately 80 students in chorus, band, and orchestra are active members.
PHS Choral Department
The Pope Choral Department has built a tradition of maintaining high standards of performance and musicianship. The Choirs of Pope High School have continually received Superior and Excellent ratings at the GMEA District 12 Choral Festivals. They tour every spring to locations around the United States. In 2001, the Pope High School Combined Choruses performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Dr. Anton Armstrong and Dr. Lynn Gackle. In addition, they are often asked to sing for occasions around metro-Atlanta.

Mrs. Zelda Johns, Choral Director
Mrs. Zelda Johns taught in Florida for nine years before joining us as Pope High School’s Director of Choral Activities. Under her direction, Mrs. Johns choirs consistently received superior and excellent ratings in both stage performance and sight reading at both the District and State levels. In addition, Mrs. Johns has served as an adjudicator for Solo and Ensemble Performance Evaluations in several districts throughout Florida. Mrs. Johns received both the Bachelors and Masters of Music Education from the Florida State University. She is an active member of the Music Educators National Conference, the American Choral Directors Association, and the Georgia Music Educators Association. Mrs. Johns is a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus.
